Harvesting of wood
Harvesting of wood

It takes a lot of painstaking work to turn an ordinary piece of wood into a real work of art. First you need to peel off the bark from the tree, and then keep it outdoors for a year. Only then will the material be ready for further processing.

Carving
Carving

With the help of a cutter, the master removes excess wood, giving the workpiece the correct shape.

Priming
Priming

The surface of the product is covered with clay primer, and then sanded so that the paint is easy to apply and remains bright for many years.

Oil varnishing

Next, the workpiece is soaked in boiled linseed oil using a tampon made of calfskin. This procedure is repeated three to four times.

Tinning
Tinning

To give the product the famous golden hue of Khokhloma, craftsmen rub silver aluminum powder into its surface. The layer should be thin, but dense.

Baking
Baking

After the final layer of drying oil, the product is sent to the oven - for firing. As a result, the silver coating magically turns golden!

Painting
Painting

Artists apply colorful painting to the golden surface. The work is done manually and without a pre-prepared template: in fact, creating a Khokhloma pattern is a creative improvisation. Therefore, each product turns out to be unique - a piece product that has no analogues.

Finishing
Finishing

The surface of the product is carefully varnished - this gives it the famous Khokhloma shine, and also ensures the long-term preservation of the pattern. For the best effect, varnishing is done three to four times.
